Physical Therapy Treatment for Women’s Health
Physical Therapy is a good alternative and conservative treatment. Often surgery can be prevented or prolonged, which is valuable because often some surgeries later need redone and/or revised. Even if a surgery is planned the outcome will be better when you are able to strengthen and learn proper abdominal and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.
Treatments are available for the following

Conservative treatments are:
Pelvic floor strengthening and re-education: It really isn’t just as easy as doing a kegel. My patients are always surprised how difficult pelvic floor exercises (kegel exercises) really are. With testing and treatment for your pelvic floor, you can become a pro. Sometimes muscle dysfunction is present that requires other treatments before you will be able to do this exercise effectively. Remember it is possible to strengthen muscles at any age!
Manual Therapy: Special training and skills for the pelvic and abdominal area allow me to feel where there is tissue/muscle tension and treat this with hands on techniques including Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Release, Deep tissue Massage, this treatment is very effective in treating many forms of abdominal and pelvic pain.
Scar Tissue Treatment: Many different surgeries of the pelvis and abdomen create scar tissue. It can also be created during a tear of cut (episiotomy) during delivery of children. Treatment of scar tissue includes desensitization of scar tissue, mobilization to prevent and treat painful adhesions, and increased blood flow for increased scar tissue healing and health.
Biofeedback: Biofeedback comes in many forms including verbal and tactile (touch) cues. SEMG is also a well-known and effective form of biofeedback. Special equipment allows me to see how you are coordinating your muscles. It is a great tool to help improve your mind-body connection to your muscles, helping you to properly relax and properly contract.
Relaxation Techniques: For some, relaxing is more challenging than contracting the muscles. Many women actually hold their stress in the pelvic floor muscles and are unaware of this, but it does create pain and dysfunction. Down-training and relaxation techniques are another way to regain normal function of the pelvic floor muscles.
Pelvic Floor Electrical Stimulation: Yes, this sounds scary, but is not painful and is very effective for treating incontinence and also for boosting the strengthening process of the pelvic floor.
Education: There is a lot education and teaching when it comes to dealing with women’s health. From teaching and training what’s normal bowel and bladder dysfunction, to body mechanics and ways to avoid low back pain during pregnancy, proper posture, pelvic and abdominal bracing during functional activities (especially important for Pelvic Organ Prolapse), dietary changes for good bowel and bladder function, general fitness and nutrition recommendations.
